There are historians who state that Tippu Sultan was a religious persecutor of Hindus.^[37][38] C. K. Kareem also notes that Tippu Sultan issued an edict for the destruction of Hindu temples in Kerala.^[39] Hindu groups revileTipu Sultan as a bigot who massacred Hindus.^[40] He was known to carry out forced conversions of Hindus and Christians.^[41]

Tipu got Runmust Khan, the Nawab of Kurool, to launch a surprise attack upon the Kodava Hindus (also called Coorgs or Coorgis) who were besieged by the invading Muslim army. 500 were killed and over 40,000 Kodavas fled to the woods and concealed themselves in the mountains.^[42] Thousands of Kodava Hindus were seized along with the Raja and held captive at Seringapatam (Srirangapatna). They were also subjected to forcible conversions to Islam, death, and torture.^{[43][full citation needed]}

In Seringapatam, the young men who were forcibly circumcised were incorporated into the Ahmedy Corps, and they formed eight Risalas or regiments.^[42] The actual number of Kodavas that were captured in the operation is unclear. The British administrator Mark Wilks gives it as 70,000, Historian Lewis Rice arrives at the figure of 85,000, while Mir Kirmani's score for the Coorg campaign is 80,000 men, women and child prisoners.^[42] In a letter to Runmust Khan, Tipu himself stated:^[44][

We proceeded with the utmost speed, and, at once, made prisoners of 40,000 occasion-seeking and sedition-exciting Coorgis, who alarmed at the approach of our victorious army, had slunk into woods, and concealed themselves in lofty mountains, inaccessible even to birds. Then carrying them away from their native country (the native place of sedition) we raised them to the honour of Islam, and incorporated them into our Ahmedy corps.

In 1788, Tipu ordered his governor in Calicut Sher Khan to begin the process of converting Hindus to Islam, and in July of that year, 200 Brahmins were forcibly converted and made to eat beef.^[45] Mohibbul Hasan, Prof. Sheikh Ali, and other historians cast great doubt on the scale of the deportations and forced conversions in Coorg in particular, and Hasan says that the British versions of what happened were intended to malign Tipu Sultan, and to be used as propaganda against him.^{[citation needed]} He argues that little reliance can be placed in Muslim accounts such as Kirmani's Nishan-e Haidari; in their anxiety to represent the Sultan as a champion of Islam, they had a tendency to exaggerate and distort the facts: Kirmani claims that 70,000 Coorgis were converted, when forty years later the entire population of Coorg was still less than that number. According to Ramchandra Rao Punganuri the true number of converts was about 500.^[46]

Tipu sent a letter on 19 January 1790 to the Governor of Bekal, Budruz Zuman Khan. It says:

Don't you know I have achieved a great victory recently in Malabar and over four lakh Hindus were converted to Islam? I am determined to march against that cursed Raman Nair (Rajah of Travancore) very soon. Since I am overjoyed at the prospect of converting him and his subjects to Islam, I have happily abandoned the idea of going back to Srirangapatanam now.^[47]

The following is a translation of an inscription on the stone found at Seringapatam, which was situated in a conspicuous place in the fort:^[48]

Oh Almighty God! dispose the whole body of infidels! Scatter their tribe, cause their feet to stagger! Overthrow their councils, change their state, destroy their very root! Cause death to be near them, cut off from them the means of sustenance! Shorten their days! Be their bodies the constant object of their cares (i.e., infest them with diseases), deprive their eyes of sight, make black their faces (i.e., bring shame).

He also corresponded with the Sringeri Shankaracharya – expressing grief and indignation at a raid by Maratha bandit horsemen (called Pindari), which killed many and plundered the monastery of its valuable possessions,^[49] patronised the Melkote temple (which has gold and silver vessels with inscriptions indicating that they were presented under the Sultan), for which a Kannada decree was issued that the Shrivaishnava (Hindu sectary) invocatory verses there should be recited in the traditional form. Tipu Sultan also presented four silver cups to the Lakshmikanta Temple at Kalale^[50] and probably presented the Ranganatha temple at Srirangapatana with seven silver cups and a silver camphor burner.^[51] Some historians have argued that these acts happened after the Third Mysore war, where he had to negotiate on the terms of surrender. They claim that these acts were motivated by a political desire to get the support of his Hindu subjects.

Historian Hayavadana C. Rao wrote about Tippu in his encyclopaedic work on the History of Mysore. He asserted that Tippu's "religious fanaticism and the excesses committed in the name of religion, both in Mysore and in the provinces, stand condemned for all time. His bigotry, indeed, was so great that it precluded all ideas of toleration". He further asserts that the acts of Tippu that were constructive towards Hindus were largely political and ostentatious rather than an indication of genuine tolerance.

CONVERSIONS OF HINDUS TO ISLAM

Praise be to him (God), who is the Lord of the Worlds! Thou art our Lord, support us against the people who are unbelievers. He to whom the Lord giveth victory prevails over all (mankind). Oh Lord, make him victorious, who promoteth the faith of Muhammad. Confound him, who refuseth the faith of Muhammad; and withhold us from those who are so inclined from the true faith. The Lord is predominant over his own works. Victory and conquest are from the Almighty. Bring happy tidings, Oh Muhammad, to the faithful; for God is the kind protector and is the most merciful of the merciful. If God assists thee, thou will prosper. May the Lord God assist thee, Oh Muhammad, with a mighty great victory."

During a search of his palace in 1795, some gold medals were found in the palace, on which the following was inscribed on one side in Persian: "Of God the bestower of blessings", and the other: "victory and conquest are from the Almighty". टीपू सुल्तान जयंती पर बवाल, VHP नेता की मौत

कर्नाटक सरकार द्वारा टीपू सुल्तान की जयंती मनाने के फैसले के विरोध में मादिकेरी में हिंदुत्ववादी संगठनों द्वारा आज किए जा रहे प्रदर्शन के दौरान पुलिस और प्रदर्शनकारियों के बीच झड़प हुई। इस झड़प में घायल विश्व हिंदू परिषद के जिला संयोजक सचिव कुटप्पा की मौत हो गई।

पुलिस का कहना है कि प्रदर्शन के दौरान दोनों तरफ से हुई पत्थरबाजी में एक पत्थर कुटप्पा के सिर पर लग गया, जिससे उसे काफी गंभीर चोटें आईं, और अस्पताल ले जाने तक उसकी मौत हो गई।

इससे पहले बीजेपी ने कई अन्य ट्वीट्स में टीपू सुल्तान की जयंती के विरोध का आधार स्पष्ट करते हुए लिखा था, 'कांग्रेस सरकार द्वारा मनाए जा रहे टीपू सुल्तान जयंती के जश्न में बीजेपी शामिल नहीं होगी। टीपू एक गद्दार था। वह एक क्रूर शासक था, जिसने कई हिंदुओं की हत्या की। कांग्रेस द्वारा टीपू की जयंती मनाए जाने को बीजेपी उन लोगों का अपमान मानती है, जो टीपू के हाथों मारे गए थे।'

कर्नाटक सरकार ने आज 10 नवंबर को टीपू सुल्तान की जयंती मनाने का फैसला किया था। सरकार के इस फैसले के बाद से दक्षिणपंथी गुट लगातार इसका विरोध कर रहे थे। वीएचपी, राष्ट्रीय स्वयंसेवक संघ समेत कई अन्य हिंदुत्ववादी संगठन टीपू सुल्तान को 'सबसे असहिष्णु' शासक बताते हुए उसकी जयंती मनाने का विरोध कर रहे थी, उधर कर्नाटक सरकार अपने फैसले पर कायम थी।

दक्षिणपंथी संगठनों ने पहले ही इस कार्यक्रम का विरोध करने का ऐलान कर दिया था। आज इसका विरोध कर रहे प्रदर्शनकारियों और पुलिस के बीच झड़प हुई। पुलिस ने प्रदर्शनकारियों को तितर-बितर करने के लिए उन पर पथराव और लाठीचार्ज किया। बताया जा रहा है कि इसी कार्रवाई के दौरान वीएचपी नेता की मौत हो गई।
